How much does a well water treatment system cost?

It's quoted per home, because no two wells test the same. A softener-only job and a full iron, sulfur, and UV build are very different systems. You get a written quote within 24 hours of the water test, at no cost and with no pressure.

How do I know what's actually in my well water?

We test it for free. Stains, smells, and scale narrow it down fast, but the design comes off real numbers — hardness, iron, manganese, pH, hydrogen sulfide, tannins, and TDS on site, with lab work for bacteria, nitrate, or metals when it's warranted.

Can one system fix the rust stains, the smell, and the hard water at once?

Yes — that's what a custom-built system is for. The stages run in order: sediment first, then oxidation for iron and sulfur, then softening, then polishing, with UV or reverse osmosis added when your test says you need them.

Do I need a UV light on my well?

Only if bacteria are present or your well is vulnerable — a shallow well, a cracked casing, a nearby septic drainfield, or a flood. We don't sell a UV system to a well that tests clean.

Is my well water tested by anyone else?

No. Private wells aren't regulated the way city water is, so nobody tests it but you. State health guidance is to test every year for bacteria and nitrate, and any time the taste, smell, or color changes.

How often does a well system need service?

Salt gets topped up every month or two, UV lamps are replaced annually, sediment cartridges change on a schedule set by your water, and filter media typically runs years before it needs swapping. We'll tell you the schedule for your build up front.

These are the problems South Carolina well owners call us about. Find yours below — the stains, smells, and tastes tell you a lot before we ever run a test.

Rust & orange stains

What you notice: Orange-brown rings in the toilet, rust stains on tubs, sinks, and white laundry, and water that turns cloudy-orange after it sits in a glass.
What's causing it: Dissolved and oxidized iron picked up from South Carolina's iron-rich clay and bedrock. It stains long before it tastes like anything.
How we treat it: An air-injection oxidizing iron filter sized to your measured iron level, usually paired with a softener to catch what the filter leaves behind.

Rotten egg & sulfur smell

What you notice: Water that smells like rotten eggs or a struck match — often worse on the hot side, in the shower, or first thing after the well has sat overnight.
What's causing it: Hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water, or sulfur-reducing bacteria living in the well and the water heater.
How we treat it: Air-injection oxidation followed by catalytic carbon. When the source is bacterial, we shock chlorinate the well and swap the heater's anode rod.

Hard water & scale

What you notice: Soap that won't lather, spots and film on glassware, crusty white buildup on faucets and shower heads, stiff laundry, itchy skin, and water heaters that die years early.
What's causing it: Dissolved calcium and magnesium. Most private wells in South Carolina test moderately to very hard, and the minerals plate out on everything they touch.
How we treat it: An ion-exchange softener sized to your grains-per-gallon hardness and household size, set to regenerate on demand instead of on a timer so you aren't wasting salt or water.

Black specks & gray staining

What you notice: Black or dark brown specks in ice cubes and faucet aerators, gray-black stains in toilets and the dishwasher, and a bitter metallic aftertaste.
What's causing it: Manganese, which almost always shows up alongside iron in Carolina well water and stains at even lower concentrations.
How we treat it: Oxidizing filtration media rated for manganese, followed by softening to polish out the remainder.

Acidic water, blue-green stains & pinhole leaks

What you notice: Blue-green stains under faucets and around tub drains, a metallic tang to the water, and pinhole leaks showing up in copper lines.
What's causing it: Low pH. Acidic well water is common over the Upstate's granite and gneiss bedrock, and it slowly dissolves copper piping, brass fittings, and fixtures.
How we treat it: A calcite acid neutralizer that raises pH before the water reaches your plumbing, using blended media when magnesium needs correcting too.

Sand, grit & cloudy water

What you notice: Grit in aerators and toilet tanks, cloudy or milky water at the tap, fixtures that clog, and a well pump that runs harder than it should.
What's causing it: Sediment, silt, and turbidity coming off the well casing, the aquifer, or a screen and pump that are starting to fail.
How we treat it: A spin-down separator plus staged sediment filtration ahead of everything else, so the expensive media downstream doesn't get fouled.

Yellow or tea-colored water

What you notice: Water tinted yellow, amber, or tea-colored even when it's clear, an earthy or musty taste, and whites that come out of the wash dingy.
What's causing it: Tannins — organic matter leached from decaying vegetation. Common near ponds, swampy ground, and through the Lowcountry.
How we treat it: Tannin-selective resin, usually staged after softening, with a carbon pass for the taste and odor that ride along with it.

Bacteria, coliform & E. coli

What you notice: A failed coliform test, stomach illness in the house, or a well that was flooded, cracked, or left uncapped.
What's causing it: Total coliform, E. coli, or iron and sulfur bacteria entering through a compromised well cap, casing, or a septic drainfield too close by.
How we treat it: Shock chlorination of the well, then a UV disinfection system sized to your flow rate and installed downstream of filtration so the lamp stays effective.

Nitrates & nitrites

What you notice: Nothing at all. Nitrate has no taste, color, or smell — it only shows up on a test, and it matters most for infants and during pregnancy.
What's causing it: Fertilizer, livestock, and septic runoff working down into shallow wells. A genuine risk in rural and agricultural parts of the state.
How we treat it: Anion-exchange treatment for the whole house or reverse osmosis at the tap, chosen off your lab numbers rather than a guess.

Arsenic, lead & heavy metals

What you notice: Invisible. No taste, no smell, no stain — these are found by lab testing and nothing else.
What's causing it: Naturally occurring arsenic in some South Carolina aquifers, plus lead and copper leaching out of older plumbing and fittings, which acidic water accelerates.
How we treat it: Targeted adsorptive media, pH correction to stop the leaching at its source, and reverse osmosis for drinking water — all specified from your test results.

Metallic, salty or flat taste

What you notice: Water that tastes metallic, earthy, or just flat. Coffee and ice taste wrong, and the family quietly switches to bottled water at home.
What's causing it: High total dissolved solids and trace minerals that whole-home filtration reduces but doesn't take all the way to drinking-water polish.
